Is Trion Solutions Still a Certified Minority-Owned Business?

By Olivia Carter, business reporter covering corporate procurement and employment services

Last reviewed: July 29, 2026

Trion Solutions publicly describes itself as a certified minority-owned company, and an archived National Minority Supplier Development Council certificate confirms that status for a defined period. Certificate MI02403, issued through the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council on October 7, 2021, identified Trion Solution, Inc. as a certified Minority Business Enterprise through December 1, 2022.

That document verifies a historical credential.

It does not by itself establish that Trion’s certification remained continuously active through July 2026. NMSDC requires certified businesses to complete recertification annually, while Trion’s current LinkedIn profile continues to describe the company as certified without displaying a newer certificate number or expiration date.

The distinction is small in wording and large in procurement.

What the Trion certificate actually says

The archived certificate identifies the business as Trion Solution, Inc., using the singular “Solution” rather than the more commonly marketed “Trion Solutions.” It states that the company was nationally certified through the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council, an affiliate of NMSDC.

The certificate contains four concrete data points:

Certificate fieldPublished detail
Company nameTrion Solution, Inc.
Certificate numberMI02403
Issue dateOctober 7, 2021
Expiration dateDecember 1, 2022
Certifying affiliateMichigan Minority Supplier Development Council
Listed NAICS codes561320, 561330 and 561311

The listed industry codes correspond to temporary-help services, professional employer organizations and employment-placement agencies. The certificate therefore aligns with Trion’s public description as a PEO and staffing-related HR provider.

This is stronger evidence than a logo or unsupported company biography because the document identifies the legal name, certificate number, dates and certifying organization.

Its weakness is age.

The certificate expired more than three years before this article’s review date. No newer publicly indexed certificate was identified in the reviewed NMSDC, Michigan council or Trion sources.

What NMSDC certification requires

NMSDC defines a Minority Business Enterprise as a for-profit company that is at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by one or more qualifying minority individuals who are U.S. citizens. The recognized groups under its standards include Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Black, Hispanic and Native American owners.

Ownership alone is not sufficient.

NMSDC says the qualifying owners must exercise control over the business and participate in daily management. Its review process may include document examination, interviews and site visits intended to verify ownership, control and operating authority.

The organization also makes a limitation explicit: MBE certification is an eligibility determination and does not guarantee a contract or procurement outcome.

That caveat belongs near every supplier-diversity claim.

Certification can make a company visible to corporate buyers and eligible for certain sourcing programs. It does not establish that the supplier offers the lowest price, strongest service, best technology or least operational risk.

Why annual recertification matters

NMSDC states that certified suppliers can seek recertification every year through its certification system. Regional council guidance advises businesses to begin the process before the existing certificate expires so that no lapse occurs.

Annual review matters because ownership and control can change.

A company might accept new investment, sell equity, reorganize its management or transfer voting authority. Any of those events could affect whether the business continues to meet the 51 percent ownership-and-control standard.

A certificate issued in 2021 therefore answers a dated question: Trion satisfied the applicable standard for the certification period ending December 1, 2022.

It cannot answer the 2026 question alone.

Trion’s current LinkedIn profile states that the company “is a certified minority-owned company.” That is a present-tense company-associated claim, but the page does not identify the current certifying council, certificate number, issuance date or expiration date.

The most defensible description is that Trion has documented historical NMSDC-affiliate certification and currently continues to claim certified status, while a current certificate was not publicly located.

What certification can do for a PEO

Trion sells payroll, benefits, workers’ compensation and compliance administration to businesses across the United States. Its LinkedIn profile says it operates in all 50 states, Puerto Rico, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

That service profile can fit corporate supplier-diversity programs in two ways.

First, a large company may count spending with a certified Trion entity toward its direct diverse-supplier purchasing goals.

Second, Trion can sit inside a broader workforce or HR-services supply chain, where a corporate buyer evaluates payroll, PEO, staffing or administrative vendors through a formal procurement process.

NMSDC says certification gives eligible suppliers visibility and access within a national network of corporations, entrepreneurs and other certified businesses. It can also provide access to matchmaking events, business-development opportunities and educational programs.

Access is the operative word.

Certification can place Trion in a qualified pool. The buyer can still evaluate service scope, insurance, cybersecurity, geographic coverage, pricing and client references before awarding a contract.

The certificate does not measure payroll quality

Trion’s archived MBE certificate verifies ownership and control under the certifier’s standards. It does not test payroll accuracy, tax-filing performance or employee-support response times.

The same document does not establish:

  • SOC 2 control effectiveness
  • IRS CPEO status
  • State PEO registration
  • Workers’ compensation claims performance
  • Client retention
  • Revenue or profitability
  • Employee demographics
  • Benefit-plan quality

These topics require separate documents.

A company can maintain valid minority-owned certification while experiencing an ordinary commercial dispute or service failure. Another business can deliver excellent payroll service without qualifying as an MBE.

Ownership credential and operational quality should not be merged.

This is the central reality check.

Certification also does not describe Trion’s workforce

The term “minority-owned” concerns ownership and control of the business. It does not mean that a majority of employees belong to minority groups.

Trion does not publish a current workforce-demographics report showing race, ethnicity, gender, management representation or promotion rates.

The archived certificate therefore cannot support claims about Trion’s internal diversity, equity and inclusion outcomes.

This distinction is frequently blurred in corporate profiles. A company may be minority-owned because qualifying individuals hold and control at least 51 percent of the business, while its workforce composition could follow a different pattern entirely.

No contradiction exists between those facts. They are different measurements.

How large is the certified MBE economy?

NMSDC reported that certified MBEs generated $599.7 billion in total economic output during 2024, supported more than 2.2 million jobs and delivered $168 billion in wages. The association said those figures represented annual gains of 9.4 percent in output, 10 percent in jobs and 12.3 percent in wages.

NMSDC’s broader network includes more than 17,000 certified MBEs and over 500 national corporate members, according to the organization’s current mission page.

NMSDC network measureReported figure
Certified MBEs in the networkMore than 17,000
National corporate membersMore than 500
2024 economic output$599.7 billion
Jobs supportedMore than 2.2 million
Wages supported$168 billion

These are network-wide economic-impact estimates, not figures attributable to Trion.

Trion’s archived certification establishes its participation during the documented period. It does not indicate how much of the network’s output, employment or wages came from Trion.

Assigning even a proportional share would be unsupported because NMSDC-certified businesses vary enormously in size.

Census data gives a broader benchmark

The Census Bureau’s latest published business-owner characteristics reported approximately 496,000 Hispanic-owned employer firms, 201,000 Black-owned employer firms, 685,000 Asian-owned employer firms, 55,000 American Indian or Alaska Native-owned employer firms, and 9,000 Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander-owned employer firms in the underlying reference data.

Those categories overlap differently with NMSDC standards and should not be added mechanically into one unique-company total.

Census data measures business ownership through federal statistical surveys. NMSDC measures companies that applied for and passed its certification process. A minority-owned employer can exist without NMSDC certification, while a certified MBE represents only one portion of the broader Census population.

That difference explains why supplier-diversity databases are not comprehensive directories of every minority-owned firm.

Certification is voluntary.

Why corporate buyers ask for the actual certificate

Supplier-diversity teams commonly require a current third-party certificate rather than accepting a self-description.

A current document allows the buyer to verify:

  • The exact legal entity
  • Certification category
  • Certifying body
  • Certificate number
  • Issue date
  • Expiration date
  • Relevant industry codes

Those fields matter for Trion because the corporate group has used several related entity names in regulatory and legal documents.

A contract with Trion Solutions II, Inc., for example, should not automatically be assumed to carry certification issued to Trion Solution, Inc. The buyer would need to confirm whether the contracted entity appears on the current certificate or is otherwise covered under the certifier’s rules.

The 2021 certificate names one entity.

That is not a minor typographical issue. Supplier-diversity credit is generally tied to the legal supplier receiving the spend, not merely to a shared brand name.

NAICS codes define the certified service area

Trion’s archived certificate lists three NAICS codes:

  • 561320: Temporary Help Services
  • 561330: Professional Employer Organizations
  • 561311: Employment Placement Agencies

These codes place Trion inside the administrative and staffing-services sector rather than a general technology or insurance category.

The classification can affect procurement searches.

A corporate buyer looking for a diverse payroll or PEO provider may search the professional-employer code. Another buyer sourcing temporary labor may use the temporary-help code. A third may search employment-placement suppliers.

The certificate’s codes do not prove that every Trion subsidiary performs all three functions.

They describe the products and services attached to the certified profile during the certificate period.

A current buyer would need to verify whether the same codes remain on a renewed record.

Where the minority-owned headline misleads

The statement “Trion is a certified minority-owned company” leaves out the most important administrative details.

It does not identify:

  1. The certifying organization
  2. The legal entity
  3. The certificate number
  4. The current validity period
  5. The covered service classifications

The archived document fills those gaps for 2021 and 2022. It does not fill them for 2026.

Another misleading interpretation is that certification guarantees access to government contracts. NMSDC is a private-sector certification network, and its own materials state that certification does not guarantee contracts or business outcomes.

A third error is treating the credential as evidence of operational performance. The certification review concerns ownership and control. Payroll accuracy and regulatory compliance require separate diligence.

The headline is directionally credible.

The current documentation is incomplete.

What would verify Trion’s present status?

A current certificate or searchable NMSDC profile would provide the strongest confirmation.

The document should show:

  • Trion’s exact current legal name
  • Certificate number
  • Michigan affiliate or other issuing council
  • Current issue and expiration dates
  • Active NAICS codes
  • Any covered affiliates

A current supplier-diversity questionnaire could provide additional information, but company-completed forms are weaker than an independently issued certificate.

Trion’s present-tense LinkedIn claim supports continuity. The expired public certificate supports history. Neither alone replaces a current dated record.

The responsible conclusion is therefore conditional rather than categorical.

Frequently asked questions

Is Trion Solutions minority-owned?

Trion’s current LinkedIn profile says it is a certified minority-owned company. An archived NMSDC-affiliate certificate also confirms that Trion Solution, Inc. held MBE certification for the period ending December 1, 2022.

What was Trion’s certificate number?

The archived certificate displays number MI02403. It was issued on October 7, 2021.

Is that certificate still valid?

The public certificate expired on December 1, 2022. No newer publicly indexed certificate was identified in the reviewed sources. That does not prove Trion failed to recertify; it means current status cannot be confirmed from the archived document alone.

Who certified Trion?

The document says Trion was nationally certified through the Michigan Minority Supplier Development Council, an NMSDC affiliate.

What does MBE certification require?

NMSDC requires a qualifying business to be at least 51 percent owned, operated and controlled by eligible minority U.S. citizens. Its review may include documentation, interviews and a site visit.

Does certification guarantee Trion a corporate contract?

No. NMSDC states that certification establishes eligibility and does not guarantee procurement outcomes.

Does minority-owned status prove Trion has a diverse workforce?

No. MBE certification concerns company ownership and control. Trion does not publish enough current workforce-demographics data to determine the composition of its employees.

The strongest verified statement is precise: Trion Solution, Inc. held NMSDC-affiliate MBE certificate MI02403 through December 1, 2022, while the company continues to claim certified status today without displaying a newer public certificate in the reviewed sources.
