Glassdoor currently estimates annual pay of approximately $53,735 for a Trion Solutions payroll specialist, based on salary information submitted by employees. The figure is substantially below the $72,910 national median for human resources specialists reported in the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook: Human Resources Specialists, updated with May 2024 wage data.
That comparison needs care.
Trion Solutions is a privately held professional employer organization, or PEO, headquartered in Troy, Michigan. Its work includes payroll processing, employee-benefit administration, workers’ compensation and regulatory compliance for client businesses.
The company-specific salary information is limited, while BLS figures cover entire occupations across thousands of employers. The available numbers can identify a plausible pay position, but they cannot establish a formal Trion salary schedule.
What the reported Trion Solutions salary shows
Glassdoor’s Trion Solutions salary page lists approximately 72 submitted salaries across the company and displays an estimated payroll-specialist salary of $53,735 per year, equivalent to roughly $26 per hour. The Michigan-specific page lists a similar payroll-specialist estimate of $54,034, based on salary information associated with Michigan employees.
The close match between the national and Michigan figures is useful, but it does not make the estimate definitive. Glassdoor salaries are self-reported, job titles may be standardized imperfectly, and the publicly visible total includes multiple roles rather than a large payroll-specialist-only sample.
The safest reading is narrow: reported payroll-specialist compensation at Trion appears to sit in the low-to-mid $50,000s, not that every specialist receives the same amount.
| Pay measure | Reported amount | What the measure represents |
|---|---|---|
| Trion Solutions payroll specialist | $53,735 annually | Glassdoor company-specific estimate from submitted salaries |
| Trion Solutions payroll specialist in Michigan | $54,034 annually | Glassdoor Michigan estimate from submitted salaries |
| Human resources specialist, national median | $72,910 annually | BLS May 2024 occupational median across industries |
| HR specialist in employment services | $58,650 annually | BLS May 2024 median for the employment-services industry |
| Compensation and benefits specialist | $77,020 annually | BLS May 2024 national occupational median |
One comparison stands out. The reported Trion payroll figure of $53,735 falls only $4,915 below the BLS median of $58,650 for HR specialists working in employment services, a category closer to Trion’s outsourcing business than the all-industry HR benchmark.
That industry-adjusted comparison is more meaningful than placing every Trion payroll role beside the entire HR profession.
What BLS pay data actually shows
The BLS does not publish a Trion Solutions wage table. It publishes occupation-wide estimates covering employers throughout the economy.
For human resources specialists, the BLS reported a $72,910 median annual wage in May 2024. The lowest-paid 10 percent earned below $45,440, while the highest-paid 10 percent earned more than $126,540. Within employment services, the median was lower at $58,650.
That distinction matters because HR outsourcing firms tend to employ operational specialists handling recurring transactions, client questions, payroll corrections, enrollments and compliance records. The national HR-specialist category also includes corporate recruiters, employee-relations staff and higher-paid specialists working in government, manufacturing and professional services.
BLS reported a $81,330 median for HR specialists in professional, scientific and technical services, compared with $62,060 in healthcare and social assistance and $58,650 in employment services.
Industry changes the baseline.
A Trion payroll specialist reported near $53,735 is therefore about 7 percent below the BLS employment-services median, rather than roughly 26 percent below the national HR-specialist median. Those percentages are calculated from the cited Glassdoor and BLS figures and should be treated as comparisons between different datasets, not as measured Trion pay gaps.
Payroll work is not identical to general HR work
Payroll specialists occupy an awkward position in federal wage classifications. Their responsibilities may overlap with payroll and timekeeping clerks, HR specialists, benefits specialists, accountants and client-service employees.
Trion’s own payroll-services description lists payroll journals, check registers, tax liabilities, job-costing reports, workers’ compensation records, time sheets and department-level reports among the functions supported by its platform.
Those duties are more transaction-heavy than many general HR-specialist positions. They also carry operational risk. A payroll employee may be responsible for wage calculations, tax withholding, deductions, corrections and deadline-sensitive filings affecting workers at several client companies.
The title alone does not reveal the complexity of the assigned accounts.
This is one reason company salary aggregators can produce misleading comparisons. A payroll specialist serving smaller, standardized accounts may have a different workload from a senior payroll specialist responsible for multistate taxation, benefit deductions or large client implementations, even when both profiles appear under the same public title.
Benefits roles carry a higher occupational benchmark
Trion also operates a dedicated benefits-administration function. Its published service description includes health, dental, vision and life coverage administration, Affordable Care Act compliance, COBRA administration, benefit deductions, new-hire monitoring and Form 1095 reporting.
The closest BLS category is compensation, benefits and job analysis specialists. The Occupational Outlook Handbook: Compensation, Benefits, and Job Analysis Specialists reported a $77,020 national median in May 2024. The lowest 10 percent earned below $48,300, and the highest 10 percent earned above $128,830.
Industry medians ranged from $67,950 in healthcare and social assistance to $89,600 in professional, scientific and technical services. Insurance carriers and related businesses posted a $72,310 median.
No sufficiently reliable Trion-specific benefits-specialist salary was visible in the reviewed sources. Assigning the BLS median directly to Trion would therefore be unsupported.
The data does show that benefits analysis and plan-design work generally commands more than routine payroll processing. Whether that premium appears inside Trion depends on the actual job scope, seniority and client responsibilities.
Where the headline number misleads
The $53,735 Glassdoor estimate looks precise. Its precision exceeds the strength of the underlying public evidence.
First, Glassdoor does not publish a company-approved salary scale. It aggregates submissions, applies title matching and may calculate estimates from a small group of reports.
Second, the number represents one role. It says little about HR managers, sales representatives, benefits administrators, technology staff or executives.
Third, total compensation may differ from base salary. Public salary pages do not consistently capture employer-paid insurance, retirement contributions, bonuses, commissions or other forms of compensation.
A separate Glassdoor result estimates Trion sales-representative compensation at roughly $127,851 per year, but the page identifies only two submitted salaries for that role. The estimate is too sample-sensitive to support a broad conclusion about Trion’s sales organization.
Small samples move sharply.
The payroll estimate is more credible as a directional marker because the national and Michigan pages produce similar results. It remains an estimate, not a contractual rate.
How Trion’s business model affects the comparison
Trion operates as an administrative employer for client companies. Its FAQ explains that a worker employed at a client business may receive a paycheck or Form W-2 from Trion because Trion handles payroll processing and tax administration.
That arrangement creates two distinct worker groups:
- Corporate employees who work directly in Trion’s payroll, benefits, compliance, sales and support operations.
- Worksite employees who perform jobs for Trion client companies but appear in Trion-administered payroll or tax records.
Salary websites may not always separate those populations cleanly.
A warehouse employee, healthcare worker or administrative assistant paid through the Trion system is not necessarily performing work for Trion’s corporate HR operation. Using every salary associated with the company name to calculate an internal corporate average would mix unrelated occupations and employers.
This appears to explain some of the unusually broad third-party salary estimates found in search results. One salary site places overall Trion pay in Troy at $38,710 annually and displays occupations ranging from tack welder to higher-paid corporate positions. That occupational mix likely includes worksite or staffing assignments rather than only Trion headquarters employees.
The analytical consequence is important: role-specific figures are more useful than a single company-wide average.
Is the career field growing?
BLS projects employment of human resources specialists to increase 6 percent from 2024 through 2034, compared with 3 percent for all occupations. The agency expects approximately 81,800 HR-specialist openings per year, largely because workers will change occupations or leave the labor force.
For compensation, benefits and job analysis specialists, BLS projects 5 percent growth and approximately 8,500 openings per year over the same period.
Human resources managers have a higher wage ceiling. Their national median reached $140,030 in May 2024, with projected employment growth of 5 percent from 2024 through 2034. BLS notes that some companies outsource HR functions to service organizations instead of employing all HR managers internally.
That outsourcing language is directly relevant to the PEO model. It suggests continued demand for organizations capable of managing payroll, benefits and compliance across multiple client businesses, although it does not constitute a Trion-specific hiring forecast.
Does Trion Solutions publish its benefits package?
Trion publishes extensive descriptions of the benefits services it administers for client businesses, including medical, dental, vision and life coverage. Those pages describe what Trion can arrange or administer for clients, not necessarily the benefits provided to every Trion corporate employee.
Public employee reviews have mentioned employer-paid benefits and retirement matching, but at least one prominently indexed statement dates to 2018. It cannot establish the company’s 2026 plan terms.
No current public document reviewed for this article specified employee premium percentages, deductible amounts, paid-time-off schedules or a retirement-match formula for Trion’s corporate workforce.
Any article presenting those details without a current plan document would be guessing.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a payroll specialist at Trion Solutions earn?
Glassdoor displays an estimated annual salary of $53,735, or roughly $26 per hour, for a Trion Solutions payroll specialist. The Michigan-specific estimate is $54,034. Both are self-reported or modeled figures rather than an official company pay scale.
Is Trion Solutions pay below the HR industry average?
The reported payroll-specialist figure is below the BLS $72,910 national median for all HR specialists, but it is closer to the $58,650 median for HR specialists working in employment services. The second comparison better reflects an outsourced HR environment.
Does Trion Solutions employ everyone who receives a Trion W-2?
Not in the ordinary workplace sense. Trion states that it acts as an administrative employer for client companies and may issue paychecks and W-2 forms to employees who perform their work for those client organizations.
Is Glassdoor salary data reliable?
It is useful for identifying a range or directional estimate, but it is self-reported and sample sizes vary. BLS data has a stronger statistical foundation, although BLS reports occupational and industry averages rather than Trion-specific salaries.
What is the median salary for benefits specialists?
BLS reported a $77,020 median annual wage in May 2024 for compensation, benefits and job analysis specialists. That is a national occupational figure and should not be presented as a Trion salary.
Does Trion publish exact health-insurance or 401(k) terms?
No current public plan document containing exact corporate-employee contribution rates, deductibles or retirement-match terms was identified. Trion’s public benefits pages primarily describe services provided to client employers.
What is the strongest available conclusion?
Public data places reported Trion payroll-specialist compensation near the low-to-mid $50,000s. That appears modest against the entire HR profession but closer to the BLS employment-services benchmark. The company’s private status, PEO structure and limited role-specific samples prevent a defensible company-wide salary estimate.
